How To Cure Your Fat Golf Shot and Hit The Ball Solid Everytime

Post date: November 21, 2009

Curing your fat golf shot is not a tough as you may think. It’s usually a pretty easy fix actually. The primary cause of the fat golf shot is letting the back shoulder dip towards the ground during the swing. You may not realize it right now, but more often than not, this is what is happening. This shoulder dip causes the club head to hit behind the ball and results in a chunked shot. This often happens when you are really trying to lay into the ball to get that extra distance.

Alright, grab a club and let’s demonstrate what is happening. Perform your normal backswing but hold the club at the top. When a golfer tries to gain extra distance he will tend to move his hips horizontally towards the ball to gain momentum. This will also cause the back shoulder to dip and results in a fat golf shot.

Ok, so we know what causes our fat golf shots. Now what can we do to correct it? The key to correcting the fat golf shot is keeping our hips very still so they do not move horizontally and not letting our back shoulder dip down. If you are looking for some extra power in your shot, try to generate it from your arms and torso rather than the hips.

Golf Tips – Ball Position Part 2

Post date: November 20, 2009

Following my last article, describing where to position the ball in your stance, several of you emailed me wanting more about where to have the ball along the line of the shot direction, in relation to your feet. Re-reading the article, I see I concentrated most on distance from the body, as that’s what I struggled most with.

Whereas, it appears most of you are more concerned with the other aspect of the ball position. Just proves once again how varied we are as golfers! I revisited the notes I made during coaching, and realise there is more to say on the subject, hence this second part of the article.

To quickly recap the first part, you should place the ball away from you based on the club you’ve chosen for the shot at hand. With the driver having the longest club shaft, this means the ball will be furthest from you for the driver, and nearest to you for the shorter clubs.

Once I had that worked out, the placement of the ball along the swing line is the next issue. Again, this is based on club selection, giving us 2 things to think about having chosen our club, both distance of the ball from your body, and where along the swing line it should be.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the one plane and two plane golf swings. With so much information out there it is easy for the average golfer to get confused. One professional tells you to do something one way and somebody else tells you to swing another way. So which person is right? Well, actually they both are probably correct. That can be the confusing thing about golf. There is more than one way to swing a club. However, what we need to figure out is which instruction is correct for YOUR swing. So, let’s get started…

— The One Plane vs. Two Plane Golf Swing —

There is a big debate going around trying to determine which swing is better the one plane or two plane. This argument will probably never come to a specific answer because there are professional golfers that use each type.

For example, some of the one plane golfers include: Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Chad Campbell and Scott McCarron. These golfers swing their club around their bodies on a more flat plane which helps them keep their shoulders in line at the top of the swing.

How To Choose The Right Golf Clubs for Your Game

How we play golf has changed and a lot of that change has to do with the equipment we use. The irons we carry have changed, as most iron manufacturing companies now sell sets that start with the 4 or even 5-irons in answer to the most iron sets now start at the 4 or even 5 irons in acknowledgment of the increasing popularity of hybrid golf clubs amongst most players. It stands to reason, as for most club players hybrids are far easier to hit than the irons.

The USGA and the R…A enforce a limit on the volume of driver heads. For conforming drivers that limit is 460 cc and most club golfers would do well to play to that limit. If your driving is unpredictable, moving to a larger sized driver will in all probability help. High MOI and more even weight distribution makes modern drivers far more forgiving, even on bad swings. Playing a bigger driver means less loss of distance and accuracy on miss-hits.
