Over the years the role of the PGA pro has changed considerably. This has been brought about by the huge increase in the numbers of regular golfers, making golf one of the biggest participation sports across the globe.
The popularity of the sport has provided many opportunities for pros to specialise in specific areas of the game. These roles include full time coaches, psychologists, retailers and club mangers.
After qualifying as a member of the PGA in 1995 I spent many years working as a Club Professional. I gained much experience during this time and had the opportunity to develop my coaching skills. I decided to work full time as a golf coach, and in 2003 I launched MT Golf Academy. Lessons are delivered to individuals and groups all over North and West Yorkshire at various academy locations. All ages and abilities are catered for in a highly professional manner.
Nick Faldo, arguably one of the greatest golfing talents and winner of six Major championships, was first introduced to golf at his local club with a series of lessons with the resident pro. The three-time Open and Master Champion remains a huge supporter of the PGA professional. “My big message to club members and newcomers is always that money spent on a lesson is money well spent.”
A real passion of mine is the coaching and development of junior players. This has led to my working in schools all over North and West Yorkshire. The real aim after introducing golf into schools is the continuation of learning the game through regular tuition at one of my Academy venues, and ultimately the joining of a golf club.
I have a particular interest in the development of junior golf, which has resulted in my delivery of golf sessions within dozens of schools. Many continue with regular golf tuition at one of my academy venues which include Ghyllbeck Driving Range, Esholt and Fardew Golf Club, East Morton. Ultimately many then become golf club members in their own right. During 2009 I will be working with Bingley St.Ives Golf Club, Harden and Headley Golf Club, Bradford where I will be responsible for the development of their junior golf programmes. I will also be taking on the role as Golf Academy Manager for Shipley College, overseeing an exciting new choice of BTEC National Diplomas.
